Seoul Transportation Guide: T-money vs. Climate Card vs. Single-Journey Tickets

Getting around Seoul is much easier when you choose the right way to pay for public transportation.

For international visitors, the main options include a rechargeable transportation card such as T-money, a short-term Climate Card pass, or a single-journey subway ticket.

They are not interchangeable in every situation. The right choice depends on how long you are staying, how frequently you plan to travel, and whether you intend to use buses as well as the subway.

Here is how to choose.

1. T-money: A Flexible Choice for Exploring Seoul

T-money is a rechargeable transportation card used for public transportation.

You can purchase a card, add money to its balance, and tap it on the reader when taking eligible services. It is a practical option if you expect to make a mixture of subway and bus journeys rather than use one specific route.

How to use T-money

  1. Buy a transportation card from a suitable convenience store or station sales point.
  2. Add money to the card.
  3. Tap the card on the reader when entering the subway or boarding a bus.
  4. Follow the relevant tapping procedure when exiting.
  5. Check your remaining balance and recharge when necessary.

For buses, tap when boarding and again when getting off. Tapping out helps the fare and transfer system calculate your journey correctly.

Who should choose T-money?

Consider T-money if you:

  • Want flexibility across different routes.
  • Expect to use both buses and the subway.
  • Prefer to pay for individual journeys rather than purchase a time-limited pass.
  • Plan to travel outside Seoul, where a Seoul-specific pass may not cover all your intended journeys.

Remember that transportation-card coverage and payment procedures can vary by service. Check the requirements for any special railway, airport service, or intercity journey before travelling.

2. Climate Card: Short-Term Unlimited Travel Within Its Coverage

The Seoul Climate Card offers short-term passes designed for visitors who expect to use eligible public transportation frequently.

As of October 23, 2026, the Seoul Metropolitan Government lists these short-term pass prices:

Pass Price
1 day ₩5,000
2 days ₩8,000
3 days ₩10,000
5 days ₩15,000
7 days ₩20,000

A physical card costs an additional ₩3,000.

These passes provide unlimited use of eligible services during the pass's validity period. However, coverage restrictions apply, so check whether your planned routes are included.

An important detail about the validity period

Do not assume that a one-day pass means 24 hours from the moment you activate it.

The official Seoul guide explains that a short-term pass begins on the date it is charged and remains valid through the final bus or subway service on that calendar day.

For example, a one-day pass charged on Monday is valid until the last bus or subway service on Monday, not until the same time on Tuesday.

Plan your purchase accordingly.

Can tourists buy a Climate Card with a foreign bank card?

Seoul introduced international credit and debit card payments for short-term Climate Cards and single-journey tickets at designated vending machines on March 17, 2026.

The city announced 440 upgraded machines across 273 subway stations on Lines 1–8. An average service fee of approximately 3.7% applies when paying with an international bank card.

This does not mean every machine accepts every overseas card, or that you can automatically tap your bank card directly at every subway gate.

Check the payment options displayed at the machine before completing your purchase.

Is the Climate Card suitable for every visitor?

Not necessarily.

Choose it when you expect to make frequent journeys on eligible Seoul services during a short stay.

If your itinerary includes many trips outside its coverage, or you expect to travel only occasionally, a rechargeable transportation card may be more convenient.

3. Single-Journey Tickets: Pay for Individual Subway Trips

If you only need the subway for a small number of journeys, a single-journey ticket may be sufficient.

You can purchase one from a subway station ticket machine. The machines offer language settings for international visitors.

You will generally pay the journey fare plus a ₩500 deposit. According to the Seoul Metropolitan Government, the ticket also costs ₩100 more than the equivalent fare paid using a regular transportation card.

After reaching your destination, insert the ticket into a designated deposit-refund machine to retrieve the deposit.

Important: Single-journey tickets purchased at subway stations are for subway travel only. They cannot be used to pay for bus journeys.

If you intend to combine buses and trains throughout your stay, consider a rechargeable transportation card instead.

4. Which Option Is Best for Your Trip?

Your travel plan Option to consider
Frequent subway and bus journeys T-money or an eligible Climate Card short-term pass
Several days of frequent travel within Seoul Climate Card short-term pass
Only one or two subway journeys Single-journey tickets
Travel beyond Seoul or across different transit systems A flexible transportation card, after checking coverage
Want to avoid purchasing a separate ticket for every subway trip T-money or an eligible Climate Card pass

The best choice depends on your actual route and travel frequency. Do not buy an unlimited pass simply because it sounds convenient; compare its price with the journeys you expect to make.

5. Getting to Hongdae by Subway

Hongdae is particularly convenient to reach by rail.

Hongik University Station is served by three railway lines:

  • Seoul Subway Line 2
  • Gyeongui–Jungang Line
  • Airport Railroad

The official Seoul tourism listing for Hongdae R2 Busking Street identifies Hongik University Station Exit 8 as approximately 170 meters from the attraction.

Your best exit will depend on your destination within Hongdae, so check your map before leaving the station. Different exits can bring you to different parts of the neighborhood.

6. Practical Tips Before You Travel

Keep your transportation card accessible

Have your card ready before approaching a gate or boarding a bus. This makes the journey smoother for you and other passengers.

Remember to tap out

On buses, tap your transportation card again when getting off. Follow the subway gate procedure when leaving the station.

Check the payment method before buying

International bank-card acceptance is available at designated machines, but it should not be treated as a universal payment option throughout the transport network.

Keep a backup payment method available.

Check the latest service coverage

A pass can have restrictions based on route, operator, or service type. Review the official Climate Card information before purchasing if your itinerary includes the airport, suburban destinations, or less familiar railway lines.

Allow time for transfers

Seoul's stations can be large, and some transfers require a substantial walk. Check your route in advance rather than assuming that every transfer will be immediate.

The Best Transportation Choice Is the One That Fits Your Itinerary

For many visitors, T-money offers flexibility. A Climate Card short-term pass may offer better value for frequent journeys within its coverage. Single-journey tickets are a straightforward alternative for occasional subway travel.

The important thing is to match the payment method to the trip you actually intend to take.

With that decision made, you can spend less time figuring out ticket machines and more time exploring Seoul.
