Incheon Airport to Hongdae: Train vs. Airport Bus
How to Get from Incheon Airport to Hongdae: Train vs. Airport Bus
Arriving in South Korea for the first time? If you are staying in Hongdae, one of Seoul’s popular areas for shopping, cafés, restaurants, and nightlife, getting from the airport to your accommodation is one of the first things to plan.
The good news is that you can travel from Incheon International Airport to Hongdae by public transportation. The best option depends on your luggage, arrival time, and the location of your hotel.
Here is how to choose between the airport train and an airport limousine bus.
Option 1: Take the Airport Railroad to Hongik University Station
For many travelers, the Airport Railroad is a convenient way to reach Hongdae.
The all-stop train connects Incheon International Airport with Hongik University Station, the main railway station serving the Hongdae area. The train stops at several stations along the way, so make sure you choose the correct service.
How to take the train
- After collecting your luggage, follow the signs for Airport Railroad.
- Go to the Airport Railroad station in the airport’s transportation center.
- Look for the all-stop train heading toward Seoul.
- Board the train and get off at Hongik University Station.
- Follow the station signs to the exit closest to your accommodation.
Hongik University Station is connected to the Airport Railroad and Seoul Subway Line 2, making it useful for exploring other parts of Seoul as well.
Important: Do not confuse the two Airport Railroad services
The Airport Railroad operates an all-stop train and an Express Train.
The Express Train runs directly between Incheon Airport and Seoul Station. It does not stop at Hongik University Station.
If your destination is Hongdae, choose the all-stop train so you can get off at Hongik University Station without transferring at Seoul Station.
Check the official timetable before traveling, especially if you arrive late at night or early in the morning.

Option 2: Take an Airport Limousine Bus
An airport limousine bus can be a comfortable alternative, particularly if you have several suitcases.
Depending on the route, an airport bus may take you closer to your accommodation than the train. However, not every airport bus serves the same neighborhoods, and travel time can vary with road traffic.
How to choose the right bus
- Check the official Incheon Airport bus search page.
- Search for your destination or a nearby stop.
- Confirm that the route serves your hotel’s area.
- Check the current fare, timetable, boarding location, and ticketing instructions.
- Follow the airport signs to the correct bus stop.
Do not assume that a bus goes directly to your hotel simply because it travels to Seoul. Confirm the route and stop before purchasing a ticket.

Which Option Is Better?
| Your situation | Option to consider |
|---|---|
| You want a straightforward rail journey to Hongdae | Airport Railroad all-stop train |
| You have several large suitcases | Airport limousine bus, if the stop is convenient |
| You are arriving during heavy road traffic | Compare the current train and bus options |
| Your accommodation is far from Hongik University Station | Check the final walking distance or transfer required |
| You arrive very late at night | Verify the last train or bus before choosing |
Before You Leave the Airport
A little preparation can make your arrival much easier.
Save your accommodation address in Korean. You can show it to a driver, ask airport staff for help, or use it when checking your route.
Check the exact location of your hotel. Hongdae covers a wider area than the station itself. Two hotels described as being in Hongdae may require different exits, transfers, or walking routes.
Keep your phone charged. You may need it to check directions, contact your accommodation, or look up the latest transport information.
Check the return journey, too. When you leave Korea, make sure you know which airport terminal your flight departs from and allow enough time to reach it.
Start Your Hongdae Trip with Less Stress
For many visitors staying near Hongik University Station, the Airport Railroad all-stop train is a practical starting point. An airport limousine bus may be more convenient if its route and stop suit your accommodation.
Rather than choosing based on price or travel time alone, compare the route, luggage situation, and final distance to your hotel.
A well-planned arrival makes it easier to enjoy everything Hongdae and Seoul have to offer.
