How to Withdraw Korean Won with a Foreign Bank Card

South Korea is convenient for card payments, but there are still times when having some cash is useful. You may want Korean won for a small purchase, a traditional market, or another transaction where cash is preferred.

If you are visiting from overseas, the most important thing to know is that not every ATM in Korea accepts foreign-issued bank cards. Look for a machine that supports international cards before attempting a withdrawal.

1. Find a Global ATM

Look for an ATM marked “Global ATM” or “Global Service.” Also check that the machine displays the international card-network logo matching your card.

For example, JCB states that cards issued outside Korea can be used only at Global ATMs in South Korea. Its partner list, updated 15 September 2026, includes Korean institutions such as KB Kookmin Bank, KEB Hana Bank, Shinhan Bank, and Woori Bank. This is a JCB-specific guide, so check your own card network's requirements too.

Do not assume that every ATM inside a bank branch or convenience store accepts overseas cards. Check the actual machine.

2. Prepare Your Card Before Traveling

Before leaving home, check the following with your card issuer:

  • Is international ATM withdrawal enabled?
  • What is your card's cash withdrawal PIN?
  • What is your daily withdrawal limit?
  • Does your bank charge an overseas withdrawal fee?
  • Does your card charge a foreign currency conversion fee?

A debit card is often the more straightforward option for withdrawing cash. If you plan to use a credit card, check whether the transaction will be treated as a cash advance and what charges apply.

3. How to Use a Global ATM

The exact screen layout varies by machine, but the general process is:

  1. Check that the machine accepts your card network.
  2. Select English if a language menu is available.
  3. Choose the foreign or international card option if prompted.
  4. Insert your card and enter your PIN.
  5. Select cash withdrawal.
  6. Choose the amount in Korean won (KRW).
  7. Review the displayed fee and exchange information before confirming.
  8. Collect your cash, card, and receipt.

Some ATMs have withdrawal limits, and the limit can differ between machines.

4. Understand the Currency Conversion Screen

This is an important part of the transaction.

Some ATMs may offer to convert the withdrawal into your home currency before charging your card. This is known as Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC).

The ATM's conversion may include its own exchange rate and additional fees or markups. Visa explains that the screen should show the amount in both currencies, the exchange rate, and any additional fees, and that the cardholder must be given a choice.

If you are offered a home-currency conversion, review the rate and charges carefully. If you do not want the ATM operator's conversion, decline it and select the local currency, KRW. Your own card issuer will then handle the conversion under its terms.

5. What Fees Should You Expect?

There is no single universal withdrawal fee for every foreign card in Korea.

You may encounter two separate charges:

  • ATM operator fee: A fee displayed by the Korean ATM before you confirm the transaction.
  • Your bank's fee: A charge from your home bank or card provider for an international cash withdrawal or currency conversion.

Check both. The ATM screen will not necessarily show every fee your own bank may later apply.

6. What If Your Card Is Declined?

A declined withdrawal does not automatically mean your card is broken.

  • Confirm that the ATM is marked for international cards.
  • Check that your card's network logo is supported.
  • Make sure overseas cash withdrawals are enabled.
  • Check your balance and withdrawal limit.
  • Try a different compatible Global ATM if necessary.
  • Contact your card issuer if the problem continues.

Carrying a backup payment method is sensible, especially when arriving late or traveling outside central Seoul.

Withdraw Cash With a Little Preparation

Finding the correct ATM and understanding the currency screen can prevent unnecessary frustration and unexpected costs.

Remember three things: look for Global ATM, check the fees, and review the currency conversion before confirming.
