eSIM, SIM Card or Pocket Wi-Fi: What Should You Use in Korea?

Mobile internet makes traveling in South Korea much easier. You may need it to check subway routes, translate a restaurant menu, contact your hotel, or find a particular shop in Hongdae.

Before arriving, decide how you want to connect. South Korea offers several options for international visitors, and the best one depends on your phone, travel group, and need for calls or text messages.

Option 1: eSIM — Convenient for Compatible Phones

An eSIM is a digital SIM profile that you install on a compatible smartphone, usually by scanning a QR code.

Seoul's official tourism guide describes prepaid eSIM plans that can be purchased online and received digitally. This means you can arrange a data plan without visiting a physical shop at the airport.

An eSIM may be a good choice if:

  • Your phone supports eSIM.
  • Your phone is unlocked for use with another carrier.
  • You prefer not to remove your existing physical SIM.
  • You want to arrange mobile data before arrival.

One important detail: not every eSIM includes a Korean phone number or outgoing calls and SMS. Some plans are data-only. Check the product description carefully before buying.

Option 2: Physical SIM Card — A Familiar Alternative

A prepaid physical SIM is inserted into your phone. It can be useful if your device does not support eSIM or if you prefer a traditional SIM card.

Prepaid SIM cards are available through online purchase and airport pickup options. Seoul's tourism guide also lists airport purchase locations and other retail availability.

Before purchasing, check:

  • Whether the plan includes data only or also calls and SMS.
  • How long the plan remains valid.
  • Whether a local phone number is included.
  • Whether your device is compatible with the SIM.

Option 3: Pocket Wi-Fi — Useful for Sharing

Pocket Wi-Fi is a small portable router that creates a Wi-Fi hotspot.

It can be useful when several people are traveling together and want to connect multiple devices through one rental.

Seoul's official tourism guide describes portable Wi-Fi rental through major telecommunications providers at Incheon and Gimpo airports. Reservations and pickup arrangements are available through providers.

Remember that the router is another device you must carry and keep charged. Check the rental's return procedure and any data or device limits before booking.

Compare the Three Options

Option Main advantage Check before buying
eSIM Digital setup; no physical SIM swap Device compatibility and voice/SMS
Physical SIM Traditional SIM setup Phone compatibility and plan validity
Pocket Wi-Fi Can share a connection with several devices Battery, rental period and return process

Do You Need a Korean Phone Number?

Not every traveler needs one.

If your main requirement is maps, browsing, messaging apps, and translation, a data-only plan may be sufficient.

If you expect to make local calls, receive SMS, or complete services that require a Korean number, check that your plan actually includes those features.

For example, KT's current tourist eSIM information distinguishes between data-only and voice/data options. Its published guidance also explains that voice and SMS functions can require identity verification at an airport roaming center. This is a provider-specific condition, not a universal rule for every eSIM.

What About Free Public Wi-Fi?

Seoul has public Wi-Fi in many places, including airports, railway stations, public facilities, hotels, cafés, and restaurants.

It is useful as a backup, but relying on it alone can be inconvenient when you are moving between neighborhoods or need internet access immediately.

A Few Things to Check Before You Fly

  1. Confirm that your phone is unlocked.
  2. Check whether it supports eSIM if you plan to use one.
  3. Compare data allowances and validity periods.
  4. Confirm whether calls, SMS, and a Korean phone number are included.
  5. Read the provider's activation instructions.
  6. Check your home carrier's roaming settings and charges to avoid unexpected costs.

Stay Connected and Explore More Easily

Whether you choose an eSIM, physical SIM, or pocket Wi-Fi, having reliable mobile internet can make your Korean trip more comfortable.

Choose the option that matches your device and travel habits rather than simply selecting the cheapest advertised plan. A few minutes of preparation can save a lot of time once you arrive.
